About Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà

Located between the towns of Roses and Sant Pere Pescador on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain, Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà protects one of the last significant wetland ecosystems along the Mediterranean coast. Spanning over 4,800 hectares, the reserve features an intricate mosaic of marshes, lagoons, dunes, rivers, and reed beds, creating a rich habitat for diverse flora and fauna. This natural park serves as a crucial stopping point for migratory birds traveling along the East Atlantic Flyway, attracting ornithologists and nature enthusiasts globally. The park's geography includes salt marshes, freshwater ponds, and sandy dunes formed by sediment deposits from the Fluvià and Muga rivers. Historically, much of the area was drained for agriculture in mid-20th century but was repurposed as a protected reserve in 1983, gradually restoring the natural water regimes and biodiversity. Visitors can explore well-maintained walking trails and observatories strategically placed for optimal wildlife viewing, especially for spotting species such as herons, flamingos, and the endangered purple swamphen. The tranquil environment and flat terrain make it accessible for families and casual hikers alike. The park also offers educational exhibits highlighting the importance of wetland conservation. Its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea adds a coastal charm, with salt flats and dunes offering different ecosystems within a compact area. The combination of rich ecological value, excellent birding, and accessible infrastructure establishes Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà as a must-visit site for eco-tourism and outdoor recreation in Catalonia.
